Project Description
Our final project of the year was to find a world problem and solve it using biotech. We had approximately five weeks to work on the project. We first started off super broad by researching world problems but as time went by we got more specific by selecting ocean pollution as our world problem. Then we narrowed it down to fertilizer runoff and then we narrowed it down even more to algae blooms. After we found our issue we needed to find a solution and our solution was to make a fertilizer with hydrated lime which would raise the ph level in the water and kill most of the algae. My group then made a slideshow presentation and a comical but resourceful video to add some extra pizzazz.

Concepts
biotechnology: the exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones, etc.
hydrated lime: colorless crystal or white powder and is obtained when calcium oxide is mixed, or slaked with water
eutrophication: excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen.
algae blooms: lots of algae because of excess of nutrients in water
PH level: measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body
nitrogen: chemical element with symbol N and atomic number 7
Reflection
I think as a final project this was a success. I really enjoyed having a lot of freedom in what I wanted to do. There were very few pits and many peaks. One pit was that our solution was kind of simple because we couldn't think of something to do. I don't think this matters much because our end product was a success. This leads me on to our first peak which was our end product. Not only did we make a great presentation but we took the extra step and made a funny but informative video. We went above and beyond with this project. Another pit would be my work ethic for the first two weeks. I didn't work as hard as I should've but it improved a lot towards the end. My work ethic at the end was actually unbelievable. I worked very hard. Another peak out of many was that we worked very well as a group. No one did more work than another. We split it up evenly which was very efficient and effective. Overall I loved this project. This class was a delight to be in. Thank you for a great year!
